Carried Song
"Be Still", 2026
She stands tall in a green field under open blue sky — red headwrap, yellow blouse, teal skirt — holding a white flower in one hand like a quiet declaration. A patterned creature rests on her head as if it belongs there. A bird lands nearby. Nothing startles her. She is rooted in a way the colonial camera never allowed its subjects to be — not posed, not fixed, but planted. On her own terms.
The archive said: stand still so we can study you. This painting says something different. Be still because you already know who you are. Stillness here is not obedience. It's sovereignty.
Part of Albert Timothy's In Full Colour series, which reimagines subjects of colonial documentation — restoring saturated colour, individuality, and the natural world to figures the archive reduced to numbers.
Giclee print on fine art paper.
