She stands tall in a green field under open blue sky — red headwrap, yellow blouse, teal skirt — holding a white flower in one hand like a quiet declaration. A patterned creature rests on her head as if it belongs there. A bird lands nearby. Nothing startles her. She is rooted in a way the colonial camera never allowed its subjects to be — not posed, not fixed, but planted. On her own terms.

The archive said: stand still so we can study you. This painting says something different. Be still because you already know who you are. Stillness here is not obedience. It's sovereignty.
